It was my favourite place in the whole world.
It always had an electric atmosphere. It was a happy place.
The waiters… I remember they used to wear these stupid hats and make terrible jokes. I found them hilarious.
Then there was the food… there were more pizza toppings than you could shake a stick it.
I had pineapple. Always did. Bobby just stuck with margherita. He’s always liked his food plain. Even as a baby.
It was my birthday. We were having a nice night. Making fun of my mother for mispronouncing the waiters name and giggling at Bobby for how much mess he was making. Sauce and cheese were smothered all over his chubby cheeks.
I brought up the subject of a puppy. I always wanted one. I had my heart set on a little Dalmatian pup. You know, like from the Disney film? Mum was lying and claiming she was allergic when it happened…
Dad took a long raspy breath. His eyes rolled and he fell from his chair. Like total dead weight. Smacked his head on the floor. Not that he felt it.
He was dead before he even hit the ground the doctors said. Massive heart attack. One he didn’t stand a chance of surviving.
Mum was screaming… Bobby was sobbing… the waiters and a nurse from a nearby table were working on him… trying to bring him back…
I just sat there. Staring.
Angie: It was the worst thing I’ve ever seen. Until now. This is just…
Angie: Oh, how the hell can we help Peter through this when I can’t even fucking deal with it!? I never even met the kid and yet…
Jai: We’ll get through this, Angie. We all will. Together.
Javier: Come on. You need some air.
Angie: Peter asked me to stay with him.
Jai: I’ll stay. Just go. Take a minute.
Aimi: You all right?
Sean: Bit of a stupid fuckin’ question, lass.
Aimi: Yeah. Right. Sorry.
Sean: Nah, I take that back. Ain’t your fault, kid.
Aimi: Angie, you OK?
Javier: It’s just horrible. The little man… he’s so still… cold…
Sean: I ain’t going back down there. Not for all the booze in the world.
Angie: Peter, where have you been?
Shiro: We changed the tires on the cars.
Angie: So we’ll be able to make it back to camp by morning?
Aimi: Whoa, hold it!
Javier: Don’t take a step closer, compadre!
Joel: OK! I’m not gonna try anything!
Angie: You’re one of Eli’s men.
Joel: I was. I’m not anymore.
Shiro: Because he’s dead?
Joel: He is?
Shiro: You pretending you don’t know?
Joel: No, I swear I…
Angie: Let’s just put him down.
Joel: Hold up! I’m not like Eli or his people! I never wanted to do anything he asked. I was forced… lied to…
Aimi: You were with him when he came to our camp. And we saw you earlier at the housing complex. You were holding Lorna at gunpoint. He forced you to do that, did he?
Joel: It wasn’t like that. I swear.
Sean: Then what was it like, pal?
Joel: I’m not a bad person.
Angie: I don’t believe you.
Sean: You know what that fuckin’ mate of yours did!?
Joel: No, I…
Sean: Killed a fuckin’ kid. One that meant a lot to me.
Joel: What!? I had no idea! Oh my god… I’m so sorry.
Sean: Give me one good fucking reason why I shouldn’t shoot you dead, cunt!?
Joel: I swear it’s not as simple as me being-
Bobby: Will you talk to me!?
Bobby: Charlotte, for fuck sake!
Charlotte: Can we just walk in silence?
Bobby: Not until you tell me what went down. And why you just did what you did to Eli’s body.
Charlotte: I had to do it.
Bobby: Why? He was dead!
Charlotte: Doesn’t matter.
Charlotte: I had to see him burn.
Angie: Where’s Peter?
Aimi: I don’t know. Sean’s missing, too.
Angie: Fuck sake.
Angie: Jai, you seen Peter?
Jai: He’s putting Milo in one of the cars. I’ve tried to speak to him but he’s not talking.
Angie: Peter, where are you going!?
Angie: PETER!? WAIT!
Angie: We’ve gotta go after him.
Aimi: And split up even more?
Angie: We can’t just let him disappear, Aimi! We might never see him again!
Jai: I know where he’s going.
Angie: You do?
Jai: Isn’t it obvious?
Jai: He’s taking his boy home.
Lorna: Rise and shine.
Lorna: You sleep OK?
Peter: Better than usual.
Peter: Everyone all right?
Lorna: Not really. Georgie’s freaking out, trying in vain to find some clothes that fit her. I caught Aimi sobbing in the bathroom. When I asked if it was about Ollie, she practically slammed the door in my face. Worst of all, Shiro and Sean are arguing non-stop about the fire at the pub. I know Sean was an idiot for setting it alight, but Shiro won’t quit. Henry’s trying his best to calm them down but they’re insistent on-
Peter: A simple yes or no would’ve sufficed.
Lorna: Peter, are you-?
Peter: Can I just have five minutes to wake up, Lorna?
Lorna: All right, hon. Come down when you’re ready.
Joy: Can I come in?
Peter: You’re the only person that has the courtesy to knock, so how can I say no?
Joy: Forgive me for saying this, but you seem angry.
Peter: I am.
Joy: Wanna talk about it? I know sometimes it’s easier to talk to strangers than your own family. I’m here if you need an ear.
Peter: That’s the whole point, Joy. You’re all strangers.
Joy: Come again?
Peter: You’re all strangers to me. I don’t know you. Yet everyone seems to look at me to be in charge? To lead you all? Why is it down to me?
Joy: There wasn’t exactly a discussion about it, but after Ollie…
Peter: Yeah, after Ollie. Why did everyone assume I’d just take his place?
Joy: It felt… natural.
Peter: Because I’m a lot like him?
Joy: You see it, too.
Peter: You’d have to be blind not to.
Joy: Look, Peter, you are a lot like Ollie, there’s no disputing that. But you’re two very different men. He had more of a temper, not to say that was necessarily a bad thing, but you’re more level-headed. He didn’t have a wife and kids, you do. He’s dead, you’re alive. To say we followed you because you were an easy replacement after Ollie isn’t true. That would be an insult to you both. We followed him because he was a good man.
Joy: And we’re following you now because you’re a good man.
Joy: If you don’t want us with you… if you’d rather just focus on keeping Lorna and the kids safe…
Peter: It’s not that, Joy. I’ve come to care about you all. I’m just wondering why it has to be me in charge.
Joy: You think you’re not capable?
Peter: Henry would do a much better job.
Joy: Would he? Karen’s troubled. He has enough on his mind without worrying about everyone else, but you? You seem to be able to handle it.
Peter: I just… I don’t want to be responsible should people die under my watch.
Joy: You need to take a step back and think, Peter. I mean really. You honestly think you’ll be responsible should we die? Every night we go to bed without incident, that’s because of you. It’s because of Henry. It’s because of all of us. We all work together, and we all contribute. Don’t take this the wrong way, but you’re just the glue.
Peter: I guess when you put it like that…
Joy: I know it’s not like me to curse, but I think it’s appropriate in this case…
Peter: Go on?
Joy: You need to get your shit together.
Milo: Georgie found some playing cards in the attic!
Joy: That’s awesome, sweetheart!
Milo: Yeah, Sean says he’s gonna teach me to play poker! You coming, Dad?
Milo: You OK, Dad?
Peter: Yeah. I am. Thanks for the talk, Joy.
Joy: Sure thing.
Peter: Come on, son. Let’s go play. Up for it, Joy?
Joy: Oh, absolutely.
Peter: You think you can handle it?
Joy: I’m quite the poker player, I’ll have you know.
Peter: Ready to be humiliated?
Joy: I’d like to see you try, son.
Bobby: What is this place?
Bobby: Fucking hell.
Bobby: Fuckin’ groaners.
Bobby: Charlotte? What are you doing?
Charlotte: There’s a shovel inside the shack. Could you bring it to me? I can’t face going back in there again.
Bobby: Did you know her? Who is she?
Charlotte: Just go get it, Bobby.
Javier: You OK?
Angie: Just worried.
Javier: Peter will come back. He just needs to put his boy to rest.
Angie: I know. I just…
Angie: Wish I could do something, you know?
Javier: Say if I’m wrong, but you seem to care a lot about him.
Angie: I do…
Angie: But it’s not as if… I care about everyone.
Javier: Even me?
Angie: Well, yeah, of course.
Aimi: What are you doing up here?
Aimi: Wanna talk?
Aimi: We need to head back to camp. Check on Joy and the others.
Shiro: I’m sure they’re fine.
Aimi: I know, but we’ve been gone a day.
Shiro: I’ll come down in a minute.
Aimi: You don’t have to hide your feelings, Shiro. We’re all upset about Milo.
Shiro: I know.
Aimi: Is it about Eli’s man? The one you shot? Sid?
Aimi: I mean it was the first actual person you’ve… well, you know. One that wasn’t already dead anyway…
Shiro: He wasn’t the first.
Aimi: What? But I thought you never…
Shiro: I have.
Aimi: When!? Why didn’t you-?
Shiro: I was so horrible…
Shiro: To the kid. He always used to try and talk to me. I never gave him the time of day. Thought he was annoying. But he wasn’t, was he? He was sweet.
Shiro: I didn’t give him a chance. I wish I did. I always thought to myself that if we found him safe, I’d apologise. Try and bond with him, you know? Not many kids around these days. I wanted to like him. I wanted him to like me.
Shiro: Now he’s dead.
Shiro: I need five minutes.
Jai: Knew I’d find you here.
Sean: Well, I weren’t gonna be in the laundromat washing underwear or shopping for groceries in the supermarket, was I?
Jai: Have you?
Sean: No. Not yet.
Jai: What’s stopping you?
Sean: You, quite frankly.
Jai: You were here alone for a while before I came in. Plenty of time to drink.
Sean: Yeah, well, maybe I’ve got a lot on my mind?
Jai: Then talk to me.
Sean: Oh, doing this again, are we? Chatting about our feelings in a watering hole? Exchanging woes?
Jai: If you like.
Sean: I’ll pass this time, pal. And don’t get any ideas about setting this thing ablaze either. I plan to rinse this play dry.
Jai: Milo’s dead.
Sean: Yeah, you don’t need to fuckin’ remind me.
Jai: And he’ll still be dead by the time you reach the bottom of the bottle. It doesn’t change anything.
Sean: No, but it’ll sure make me feel a hell a lot of better.
Sean: There’s a lot of booze here. And enough nuts to feed the world’s population of squirrels for a solid month. Lots of crisps and ready meals, too. I haven’t drunk alcohol or eaten shit in weeks. I’m sick to the fuckin’ back teeth of water, fish and shitting fruit. Give me one good reason why I should leave this joint?
Jai: Because Peter needs you.
Sean: Heh. Evidently not, pal. He took off without a word. He’s done with us.
Jai: No. He’s not. I don’t believe that for a second. He’s just gone to-
Sean: I love you, Jai, but shut the fuck up, will ya? I don’t want to talk about it anymore, ya hear?
Jai: You’re just going to pretend it didn’t happen?
Jai: To stay here and drink?
Jai: Until you collapse or get yourself killed by the dead?
Sean: DING! DING! DING! It’s a hat-trick! C’mon down, contestant, and collect your prize!
Jai: Sean, this is stupid.
Sean: Well, stupid’s me middle name.
Jai: I thought it was Phelan?
Sean: You remember!? I told ya that weeks ago.
Jai: I remember things about people I care about.
Sean: Oh, behave, will ya!?
Jai: You told me how much you regret your past.
Jai: What happened to your wife and son.
Sean: Shut it!
Jai: How you drank and allowed them to go off and leave. You want that to happen again?
Sean: How fuckin’ dare ya use that against me! I confided in you, ya shit!
Jai: You going to hit me?
Sean: Trust me, old man; I’ve never been so fuckin’ tempted!
Jai: Then do it, if it’ll make you feel better.
Sean: Nah, not worth the fuckin’ hassle. I’d rather just drink.
Jai: Have it your way.
Sean: What are ya doing?
Jai: Joining you.
Sean: Don’t be fuckin’ stupid.
Jai: We’re in this together. What you do, I do.
Sean: You’re bluffing.
Jai: Try me.
Sean: You won’t touch the devil’s drink.
Jai: Won’t I?
Sean: Your faith.
Jai: I struggle to have faith in what I used to believe in, friend. Nowadays, the only thing you can depend on are the people you chose to ride this hell storm with.
Sean: Peter don’t need me. None of you do.
Jai: You know that’s not true.
Sean: I just… FUCK, Jai. The kid died.
Jai: I know.
Sean: I can’t even fathom how the lad will get through this… how he’ll ever be the same again.
Jai: He won’t. I know from experience. But he can find a way to deal with it.
Sean: You’re a walking angel, Jai. Too good for this shitty world, even if you are preachy and downright irritating to live with.
Jai: I think that might be the nicest thing you’ve ever said.
Sean: Right, c’mon. You’ve got your own way. Yet again. Hope you’re happy, old man.
Jai: I am.
Sean: This is emotional blackmail, ya know?
Jai: Worked though, didn’t it?
Sean: Cheeky fucker.
Bobby: Charlotte, I understand this has been difficult for you… but it’s been an hour and I…
Charlotte: Just go.
Bobby: On my own?
Charlotte: You can handle yourself, kid. You’ll be fine.
Bobby: I don’t even know where Angie and the others are…
Charlotte: Neither do I. I won’t be any help on that front.
Bobby: We can head back to camp. I know there were lots of groaners ‘round there, but Peter and the others would’ve gone back. It’s as good as place as any to look. And I left Georgie alone with Beatrice. I need to make sure they’re all right.
Charlotte: You can go. I can’t.
Bobby: What? Why are you saying that?
Charlotte: I won’t be welcome.
Bobby: What happened, Charlotte? Why did you leave the group? Come back to camp alone? Something happened, didn’t it?
Charlotte: I don’t want to talk about it.
Bobby: Did they die? Is Angie dead!?
Charlotte: No, they were all alive when I left them.
Bobby: Then why are you-?
Charlotte: Although Lorna’s probably dead. Because of me.
Bobby: Peter’s wife? What are you talking about!?
Charlotte: Just go.
Bobby: Tell me!
Charlotte: I’m not-
Bobby: DAMMIT, CHARLOTTE, WILL YOU TELL ME WHAT FUCKING HAPPENED!?
Charlotte: I was working with Eli, OK!?
Charlotte: He was blackmailing me… I had no choice.
Bobby: So, what, you led our friends into a trap!?
Charlotte: I guess you can say that, yeah.
Bobby: What the fuck, Charlotte!? How could you do that!?
Charlotte: Like I said, I didn’t have a choice.
Bobby: Why would you risk their lives!?
Charlotte: Eli’s dead. They’re not. I sorted it.
Bobby: But you put them all in danger! Javier… Peter… my fucking sister! Eli’s men were sent to our camp! Georgie and Beatrice could be dead for all I know!
Charlotte: Bobby, please…
Bobby: Stay back!
Charlotte: You gonna shoot me?
Bobby: I should. You’d deserve it.
Charlotte: I know.
Charlotte: So go ahead.
Aimi: Where have you guys been?
Jai: Just for a walk.
Aimi: You all right, brother?
Jai: We need to get back to camp. Check on Joy and the others.
Aimi: What about Peter?
Shiro: He took off.
Jai: But we know where he’s going.
Aimi: Maybe we should split up?
Shiro: Is that a good idea?
Sean: I’m going to check on Peter, regardless of what you guys decide to do.
Angie: Me too.
Javier: So the rest of us are going back to camp?
Aimi: I’ll go with Angie and Sean.
Shiro: I don’t wanna separate from you.
Aimi: Don’t fuss. I’ll be fine.
Jai: We’ll all regroup and meet back at camp this time tomorrow. If for some reason we can’t, we meet at the creek by the hills.
Aimi: Sounds like a plan.
Aimi: You gonna be OK?
Shiro: Don’t sweat it, sis.
Javier: See you tomorrow, Ange.
Charlotte: Can you do me a favour once this is done?
Charlotte: Bury me. With her.
Bobby: Who is she?
Charlotte: Who was she, you mean?
Charlotte: My mother. Eli had her… made me think if I did as he said then he’d spare her… give her back to me… I was a fucking fool to think he’d keep to his word…
Charlotte: Just do it, Bobby, OK? Make it quick.
Bobby: I’m not going to shoot you, Charlotte.
Bobby: Oh, shut up. You know damn well I wouldn’t be able to do it.
Bobby: I killed a man earlier…
Bobby: Put a bullet in him without hesitation…
Charlotte: You did it to protect yourself.
Bobby: Did I?
Charlotte: He would’ve killed you. You were acting in self-defence.
Bobby: I killed a man, Charlotte. I’ve taken a life. I’m seventeen-years-old. Mere months ago I used to stay up late chatting with friends, playing Minecraft… I watched fucking cartoons. Now look. What’s become of me? What’s become of all of us?
Charlotte: I don’t think that’s a question you want the answer to.
Bobby: If you can’t go back to camp, then I’m not going either.
Bobby: I’m not just going to leave you alone out here.
Charlotte: Don’t be stupid. What about Angie? You should be with her… with the others.
Bobby: We need to find somewhere safe first. Neither of us will make it if we wander off alone.
Charlotte: Are you sure about this, kid?
Bobby: I am.
Charlotte: Come on…
Bobby: Where we going?
Charlotte: I have somewhere in mind…
Aimi: The drive from Winterhodge Hollow didn’t seem this long before…
Sean: I’m driving slower than what we did then, lass.
Aimi: Why? Step on it.
Sean: It’s darker in the countryside. If we hit a creeper, it could come right through the windshield.
Aimi: Didn’t think of that.
Angie: The roads are dangerous round here…
Sean: That’s the optimistic way of saying they’re fucked.
Angie: Well, yeah. Hopefully Peter’s taking it easy.
Sean: I wouldn’t put my money on that, sista.
Aimi: How much longer?
Sean: We’ll be there within the hour.
Jai: Something’s not right.
Jai: Something’s wrong.
Shiro: Where you getting that logic from, Jai?
Jai: The campfire’s out… there’s no smoke…
Shiro: Maybe they ran out of firewood?
Jai: No, not possible. We had stacks full.
Shiro: You wouldn’t even see it from here…
Jai: Yes we would, Shiro! You see smoke for miles. Put your foot down, Javier. We need to get there.
Jai: I knew it… I knew it!
Shiro: Joy!? Georgie!?
Jai: Shh! You’ll attract the groaners!
Shiro: I don’t give a fuck! Joy? JOY!?
Javier: Nobody’s here!
Jai: You sure!?
Javier: No remains, amigo. They obviously ran away.
Javier: What the-!?
Shiro: Thank fuck for that.
Jai: They managed to get away from here at least. That’s something.
Shiro: Yeah… yeah definitely.
Shiro: The dead’uns dinner…
Jai: Eli’s men. I recognise them. They all seem to have been shot… which means they lost… to our people presumably.
Shiro: Eli can stick that in his pipe and smoke it.
Jai: Let’s hope he’s a little preoccupied burning in hell.
Shiro: Where’s the Spaniard got to?
Shiro: Is she…?
Javier: She’s gone.
Bobby: Stop a second.
Charlotte: You seen something?
Bobby: A lot of it.
Charlotte: Looks like it’s coming from the old swimming center.
Bobby: Should we check it out?
Charlotte: That would be a very stupid thing to do. Think of the wanderers the fire would attract, not to mention the people who caused the damage won’t be far away.
Bobby: Yeah, didn’t think about that.
Charlotte: You have to… if you wanna keep on breathing, that is.
Charlotte: Come on. We’re not far away now.
Javier: I didn’t know her for long, but she was a good woman.
Jai: She meant a lot to me. She was a friend when I needed one the most. I never thanked her for that.
Javier: I’m sorry.
Jai: I can’t believe she’s gone.
Shiro: How did she-?
Jai: There’re no signs indicating the dead got her, thank goodness, but…
Jai: She has a gunshot wound…
Shiro: This was them!
Javier: They’re dead, hermano!
Javier: Shiro, stop!
Jai: Let him.
Angie: Sorry to startle you. We let you sleep for a while, but I just thought it might be best to let you know we were here…
Angie: How you feeling?
Angie: I know… stupid question… sorry…
Angie: Do you want us to-?
Aimi: He wants to do it alone.
Sean: Aye. Can’t blame the lad for that.
Angie: I just wish there was something we could do…
Sean: There’s not a damn fuckin’ thing we can do, lass.
Jai: Oh, good grief! You startled me.
Javier: Sorry, amigo.
Jai: No, don’t be. I’m glad it’s you. Any luck?
Javier: No sign of them anywhere.
Jai: For heaven’s sake.
Javier: No bodies either, compadre. That’s something.
Jai: I suppose. Where’s Shiro?
Javier: Out searching. He said he’s not coming back until he’s found Beatrice and brought her back safe.
Jai: (Sighs). Let’s hope Bobby and Georgie can handle things and look after her on their own…
Javier: Bobby’s a smart kid. He survived along with me for weeks. He’ll look after them.
Jai: I appreciate that, but he’s just a boy himself.
Javier: They’re alive. They have to be.
Javier: Don’t they?
Peter: You have to help me.
Sean: Just say the word, boyo. What do ya need?
Peter: You need to help me find Lorna.
Angie: Of course.
Charlotte: Shut up. There are too many groaners about. We need to stay quiet.
Bobby: That’s my complaint exactly. This isn’t safe. Where are we going!?
Charlotte: All right. Good. We’re here.
Bobby: Is this the compound?
Charlotte: Yeah, Alexis’s place.
Bobby: We shouldn’t risk this. That woman’s a psycho. Angie said she killed Vicky.
Charlotte: You won’t be staying.
Bobby: I won’t?
Charlotte: Last I saw, Alexis was with Peter and the others. She might know some information about where they are. So, we can rest up here for the night, and then you can leave tomorrow. I’m sure she’ll help us.
Bobby: Why would she?
Charlotte: Because I killed Eli, and I think it’s fair to say she was happy about it.
Bobby: Charlotte, I…
Charlotte: We shouldn’t talk.
Bobby: I just wanted to say I’m sorry I raised my gun at you earlier.
Charlotte: You don’t have to apologise.
Bobby: I do. It’s not your fault what happened, if you did get Lorna killed I mean… Eli tricked you. It wasn’t on you. You were just doing what anybody would’ve done.
Charlotte: I’ve always been so quick to act. My old man used to say that about me when he took me hunting… I hated his guts, but he was right. I never had any patience. I always wanted to get straight to the shooting… I didn’t see the point on standing around… waiting…
Charlotte: I thought I could be quicker than a deer or a rabbit… I mean, how dumb is that? I used to run in, all guns blazing.
Charlotte: For the longest time, I thought I had stopped doing that, but I obviously haven’t. I killed Eli without even considering the ramifications it might’ve had on Peter and the others… I should’ve used my head…
Charlotte: If Lorna has died… then it is on me… I’m gonna have to live with that…
Charlotte: Do you think Peter will ever understand?
Charlotte: WHAT THE-!?
Charlotte: OH MY GOD!
